Juliana Schneider

Juliana began her teaching career as a fourth grade teacher, later taught a  combined 5/6 grade classroom in Somerville, and most recently taught fifth grade in Wellesley. While in Wellesley, Juliana completed her Literacy Specialist Certification, was involved in multiple initiatives including work around digital literacy and "nonlinear reading", as well as worked with a colleague to explore how best to narrow the gender gap with elementary readers, focusing on "Boys and Literacy." She has facilitated Professional Learning for teachers on a variety of topics and taught as an adjunct instructor at Lesley University. After completing her administrative license, Juliana joined the Merriam School community as Assistant Principal and focused much of her energy on leading curriculum work including project development and curriculum mapping. Juliana is thrilled to move into the role as principal of Merriam School, a school community she has grown to love. She deeply believes in focusing on a child's strengths and listening for his or her story. She believes that if we approach children in this way, we nurture confidence,  inspire deeper learning, and model love and compassion.
In her free time she enjoys the variety life offers including sailing, hiking, picnicking on the beach, strumming her guitar, admiring her honey bees and antiquing. Occasionally she enjoys running.

Bryant Amitrano
Assistant Principal

Prior to joining us at Merriam School, Bryant taught all subject areas, and most recently taught sixth grade science, worked within an integrated Project Based Learning curriculum and worked in a number of leadership capacities within Somerville. Bryant supported new teachers as a District Mentor Coordinator as well as organized and implemented Peer Observation opportunities for teachers within his own school, similar to the Merriam model of Triads. Additionally, Bryant facilitated science curriculum work and lead the implementation of the Next Generation Science standards. He has lead multiple Professional Learning opportunities within STEAM and he was instrumental in working with a group of coders to develop an internal data tracking system called Student Insights. This program was adopted within the Somerville Public Schools.  Most importantly though, Bryant has developed strong relationships with children, families and his colleagues.
